AMD Richland Desktop Lineup:

The new Richland APUs are being dubbed as AMD Elite A-series Desktop APUs. The lineup includes 5 APUs with FM2 socket support. Pricing starts from $80 and goes up to $142; that’s around $10-20 higher than the Trinity series APUs.

All the Richland APUs have similar TDPs as compared to their predecessors but all of them have a considerable increment in their clocks. The top of the line, A10-6800K, has a base clock of 4.1 GHz and turbo of 4.4 GHz. All the new APUs also get Radeon HD 8000D-series graphics but these are merely rebranded HD 7000D-series chips with slightly higher clocks.

Closer Look at the A10-6800K:

We’ve the flagship A10-6800K APU with us. In terms of physical appearance, it is identical to the last year’s Trinity APUs as both use the same FM2 socket. It is one of the three unlocked APUs from the Richland lineup and it costs $142.

Competition:

AMD puts their Richland APUs against Intel’s Core i5 and i3 products. According to a slider provided by AMD, the A10-6800K beats the Core i5-4670K but obviously AMD only focuses on the integrated graphics performance. The A10-6800K is around $50 cheaper than the cheapest Haswell Core i5 CPU which puts it in a very good position. So, if you don’t want absolute CPU performance, the APUs are better options as they prove to be more efficient in most general tasks.

If you plan to pair an APU with a discrete GPU for a mid to high-end gaming system, I would still say that it’s not a bad idea since the CPU performance wouldn’t be affecting the gaming performance in most scenarios.
