In a rather expected refresh revealed earlier today, Apple has updated their entire lineup of MacBook Pro with Retina displays. The update did get leaked at the weekend through an Apple store in China. The update incorporates the latest Haswell Refresh models that Intel launched earlier this month. Most of these chips are about 200 MHz faster than their predecessors for same price and they have found their way to the updated Retina MacBooks. Apart from that, Apple has also bumped the standard RAM capacity of 13-inch model to 8GB and the 15-inch model to 16GB. It was previously 4GB and 8GB respectively.
The $1299 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina used to have 2.4 GHz Core i5 processor and 4GB of DDR3 RAM but now it comes with a 2.6 GHz Core i5 processor and 8GB of RAM as standard. That’s a straightaway 200 MHz CPU frequency bump. Same is the case with the $1499 and $1799 configurations. Moving to the 15-inch rMBP, the base $1999 model has also gotten a faster CPU at 2.2 GHz compared to the previous 2.0 GHz one. The standard RAM across the entire 15-inch lineup has been doubled to 16GB. The top-of-the-line 15-inch rMBP now comes with 2.5 GHz processor and 16GB RAM. This configuration along with the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M discrete graphics used to cost $2599 but now its down by $100 to $2499.
All the other specifications say exactly the same. The real updated MacBook Pros with new 24W/47W Intel Broadwell chips will come in first and second quarter of 2015. For now, all the eyes are set on the rumored 12-inch MacBook Air with Retina display and inclusion of Retina display in the current MacBook Air as well. This is expected to happen in next couple of months.
All the new MacBooks will be compatible with the upcoming OS X 10.10 Yosemite update which is expected later this year. Apple will be releasing it as a free update.
In other news, the ‘previous’ MacBook Pro with Retina display models are now available with huge discounts on Apple’s refurbished store. Its a good place to save lots of money right now as discounts of as much as 37% are being offered on some models.
