ASRock Fatal1ty H87 Performance Review

ASRock Fatal1ty H87 Performance

Closer Look at the Motherboard:

ASRock hasn’t deviated much from their original Fatal1ty motherboard design that we’ve been seeing since last two generations. However, they’ve introduced a new heatsink design with the 8-series chipset. The new design is much flatter and has less fins but it has an air channel under it which should accelerate the heat transfer. Collectively, the Fatal1ty H87 Performance looks as sharp as any motherboard. The Fatal1ty line of motherboards can surely give ROG motherboards a run for their money. Though, I’ve one complaint regarding the Fatal1ty motherboards including the Fatal1ty H87 Performance and that is about the color of the PCB. Its dark brown and has been this way since the debut of this series. I am not sure what extra costs are added to the manufacturing process to make matte black PCBs like GIGABYTE does but I am sure that the extra cost or effort is worth it. Black PCBs add a lot of aesthetic value to the motherboard.

Being an H87 based motherboard; it obviously comes with LGA1150 socket supporting all the latest 4th generation Intel Haswell desktop processors. To the right side of the CPU socket, we’ve four DDR3 memory slots which support up to 32GB of memory in dual-channel mode. Slots are color coded to differentiate the channels. Due to less real estate, the memory slots are pretty close to the socket. I had issues fitting up our Thermalright Venomous X and Kingston HyperX T1 combo which fits easily on pretty much every motherboard we’ve tested so far.

For power needs, the Fatal1ty H87 Performance comes with pretty standard solution. There is a 24-pin ATX power connector and an 8-pin EPS connector; both at their ideal locations.

As any motherboard, bottom half is covered with the expansion slots. There is one PCIe 3.0 x16 slot, one PCIe 2.0 x16 slot (wired for x4 mode only), two PCIe x1 slots and three PCI slots. Although, it supports CrossFireX using both the PCIe x16 slot; it is not recommended to use this configuration as the electrically x4 PCIe 2.0 slot will be a huge performance limiting factor.

For storage connectivity, the Fatal1ty H87 Performance comes with six SATA III ports; all of which are provided by the Intel H87 PCH. However, position of the SATA ports is not ideal. They should have been on the right edge of the motherboard. Apart from all this, the usual on-board connectors are all present including front panel audio, USB 2.0 headers, USB 3.0 header along with five fan connectors.

The back I/O of Fatal1ty H87 Performance is pretty standard. There is a PS/2 port, four USB 2.0, four USB 3.0, DVI, VGA, HDMI-out, HDMI-in along with 7.1 channel HD audio and Intel powered gigabyte Ethernet port.
