The moment we all were waiting for is here. Anandtech has revealed ASRock’s X99 OC Formula motherboard, a must have for every overclocker in the world. Beast is a small word for it because it packs an insane 1300 W of power in an E-ATX form factor. ASRock has out done themselves this time and if X99 OC Formula will not break CPU records then I am not sure what will. Now we are curious to know what ASUS has in stores for us with its Rampage V Extreme motherboard but for the time being the spotlight is on the X99 OC Formula. The motherboard is designed for upcoming Haswell-E HEDT CPUs – Core i7-5960X, 5930K and 5820K.
ASRock X99 OC Formula; 1300 W power, ASRock Cloud, Conformal Coating & Purity Sound 2
ASRock X99 OC Formula features Intel’s X99 chipset supporting DDR4 memory and some overclocking goodness by the world’s No.1 overclocker Nick Shih. Shining in the traditional OC Formula’s black and yellow color scheme, X99 OC Formula features eight DDR4 DIMM slots around the LGA 2011-3 socket. Right above the CPU socket, we find a 12 phase power design capable of delivering 1300 W of power for extreme overclockers. No one has utilized that much power in the past, most overclockers have touched the 700 w mark using LN2. This motherboard is designed to reach the overclocking boundaries beyond a regular user’s imagination.
Other components at the top half of the PCB include a few overclocking buttons, voltage measure points, dual USB 3.0 internal connectors, a LN2 switch, PCIe slots on/off switches and a slow mode switch. The bottom half of the PCB is occupied by two heatsinks one for the X99 PCH and one for the CPU circuitry. There are four PCIe 3.0 x16 slots and one PCIe 2.0 x4 slot on board. Instead of SATA Express ports, ASRock has provided two M.2 slots, one shares bandwidth the PCIe 2.0 x4 slot and one is a PCIe 3.0 independent slot. There are 10 SATA 6 GB/s ports on board and since overclockers do not care much about storage not including SATA Express ports is forgivable.
Underneath the SATA ports, we find a Debug LED and a Dual BIOS switch. There are plenty of fan headers and USB 2.0 connectors available along with on/off and reset buttons at the bottom of the PCB. Additional power to the PCIe slots is provided through a Molex connector. X99 OC Formula utilizes a 8 layer copper PCB with conformal coating to prevent any damage from liquids. This is an added bonus for extreme overclockers who use plenty of LN2 to reach maximum CPU frequency.
Moving on to exclusive ASRock features, X99 OC Formula features Purity Sound 2 and Home Cloud. Purity Sound 2 includes 7.1 CH HD audio with Realtek ALC1150 audio codec, 115dB SNR DAC with Differential Amplifier, TI NE5532 Premium Headset Amplifier, cap less Direct Drive technology, EMI shielding cover, PCB isolate shielding and DTS Connect.
ASRock uses top-notch components for its CPU power circuitry. X99 OC Formula features XXL Aluminium Alloy heatsink design, Premium Alloy Choke, Dual-Stack MOSFETs for CPUs, NexFet MOSFETs for memory, Nichicon 12K Platinum capacitors and a digital power design.
X99 OC Formula’s I/O shield consists off six USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, a PS2 port, a clear CMOS button, Gigabit Ehternet port and 8-channel audio with SPDIF output. The motherboard also features an internal Thunderbolt connector and a new SATA Power feature which can be used to hide unused drives.
ASRock X99 OC Formula is the flagship motherboard from the company and the most expensive. The OC Formula always carries a high price tag but comes with plenty of goodies inside the box. With so much modifications on-board, it won’t be a surprise to see some major updates in software and BIOS for X99 OC Formula.
