ASUS STRIX GTX 970 pictured; DirectCU II cooler and DIGI+ VRM

3 days to go for the launch of NVIDIA’s latest flagship GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970 graphics cards. Videocardz has been on fire with the leaks and yet again they have come up with a picture of ASUS STRIX GTX 970. ASUS STRIX GPUs are part of the ROG line up with a state of the art cooler and DIGI+ VRM design. Visually, STRIX GTX 970 is similar to STRIX GTX 780 and R9 280X. The main difference is the reduction of heat pipes in STRIX GTX 970 because of the low thermal requirements. The GPU comes with 0dB fan technology which produce absolutely noise at idle state and only power up once the GPU exceeds 65 C temperature. ASUS STRIX GTX 970 will launch along side GTX 980 on September 19th, 2014.

We cannot confirm the GPU and memory clock speeds of STRIX GTX 970 but since the box in the image states “OC Edition” so you can expect it to be clocked higher than the reference design. The reference GTX 970 comes with a 1051 MHz core clock with GPU Boost up to 11 78 MHz. STRIX GTX 970 features 4 GB GDDR5 memory spread across a 256-bit interface. It is built with top-notch components and uses ASUS’s trademark DIGI+ VRM design. You can expect plenty of oveclocking headroom thanks to the DirectCU II cooler and very efficient Maxwell GM204 GPU.

The only worrisome thing is that the 0dB fan technology does not turn on the fans till the GPU reaches 65 C. While under load, the GPU will reach 65 C within seconds with out any air flow which might have a big impact on its lifespan. Even when the STRIX GTX 970 reaches 65 C, the fans will slowly come to life at 500 RPM and find the optimized RPM keeping the temperature and noise level in to consideration.

The reference GeForce GTX 970 will cost around $399 so we assume that ASUS STRIX GTX 970 will be priced between $400 – $450.
