Intel NUC systems changed the course of mini-PCs due to their small factor and powerful configurations. Core i series processors packed in a 4.5″ box makes a perfect HTPC setup. Gigabyte is indulging in to the concept and preparing its own 4.5″ full-fledged PC, BRIX.
Gigabyte BRIX measures 4.5″ x 4.2″ x 1.2″ which makes it slightly smaller than Intel NUC systems, it is powered by Intel’s Ivy Bridge processors but the company has a competitive advantage since they have added an option for Core i7 Ivy Bridge chips as well. Design is relatively simple, in the front users have the option of a USB 3.0 port and a power on button at the top while the back I/O consists of a power adapter port, Ethernet port, another USB 3.0 port, mini DisplayPort and a full-sized HDMI port.
Alongside powerful Intel Core i series processors, BRIX includes a mSATA slot for Solid State Drives and two DDR3 DIMM RAM slots supporting 16 GB of memory. Small-factor systems cater a very niche market but with improved designs and specifications the future of these systems looks quite bright. There are ideal for HTPC setups since they do not take a lot of space and are powerful enough to play any HD content.
