GIGABYTE’s Bluetooth 4.0 & WiFi Card Revealed

VR-Zone revealed that GIGABYTE will be offering an add-on card which will add Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi to your computer. This card uses PCI Express x1 interface. It is actually a PCI Express to mini PCI Express adapter which takes a half-sized mini PCI card. This mini PCI card will be connected to two antennas on the back and it’ll enable WiFi for your computer. GIGABYTE is using an Atheros chip for WiFi functionality. For Bluetooth 4.0, there is a USB pin header which can be connected to USB pin header on the motherboard. A standard USB port is also present on the card, you can plug any USB flash drive to it.

Speed of the WiFi could have been upgraded from 150Mbps by installing a better mini PCI Express card but there are only two antennas so speeds higher than 150Mbps are impossible. This is only objection we have on this card. GIGABYTE might fix this in new revision, if there will be any. The Bluetooth 4.0 part of this card is kind of irrelevant right now cause not many devices support Bluetooth 4.0 but its backward compatible so it can be of some use.

GIGABYTE will be bundling this card X79-UD5, X79-UD7 and G1.Assassin 2 motherboards. We hope that they start selling it separately too because it’ll make for a good way to add Bluetooth 4.0 and WiFi to your PC.
