Google brings spam protection to the Android Phone app

Google Spam Protection Android

Google has just announced a new update for the Phone app with built-in spam protection. It automatically detects spam callers and shows a little intimation under the caller ID. You can either pick up the call or ignore it. It also gives you the ability to report or block such numbers.

The spam protection features are only being rolled out to Nexus and Android One devices as Sundar Pichai, Google’s CEO, recently said that they will be bringing several exclusive features to Nexus devices. The updated APK of Phone app with this new feature is already available online but it might not work on other phones. There are some workarounds of installing it on non-Nexus devices but that require rooting and installing Open GApps Google Dialer framework.

Some non-Nexus phones like Samsung Galaxy S7 already come with such features. In case of Galaxy S7, Samsung is using Hiya’s framework for spam detection. Hiya is also available as a standalone app on Google Play store and can be installed on any Android device.

At WWDC 2016, Apple also announced that a similar feature will be baked into iOS 10 when it releases.
