Intel has finally lifted the curtain from the its new Haswell-EP Xeon E5-2600 and E5-1600 v3 product families. The company has launched a total of 32 SKUs, 26 in the E5-2600 v3 line and 6 in the E5-1600 v3 line. Both product families are only compatible with LGA 2011-3 socket and Intel C610 chipset series. The entry level E5-1600 v3 line up does not support dual-CPU configurations but both product families also support the X99 express chipset released with Haswell-E HEDT CPUs.
Intel Xeon E5 v3 Processors
A lot of improvements have been made over the years and the new generation of Xeon E5 processors are three times more powerful than the last generation Ivy Bridge CPUs, more power efficient and feature enhanced security. The processors are made for power hungry software define infrastructures (SDI) which require the best performance at an optimized total cost. Xeon E5 processors are designed to be used in servers, workstations, storage and networking infrastructures to power broad sets of workload.
“The digital services economy imposes new requirements on the data center, requirements for automated, dynamic and scalable service delivery,” said Diane Bryant, senior vice president and general manager of the Data Center Group at Intel. “Our new Intel processors deliver unmatched performance, energy efficiency and security, as well as provide visibility into the hardware resources required to enable software defined infrastructure. By enabling the re-architecture of the data center, Intel is helping companies fully exploit the benefits of cloud-based services.”
Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 Product Family
Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 product family offers 50% more cores compared to Ivy Bridge-EP line up. Last generation flagship Xeon E5-2697 v2 CPU featured 12 cores and 24 threads but the new Xeon E5-2699 v3 flagship CPU offers 18 cores and 36 threads plus a 45 MB L3 cache. A massive improvement in terms of processing power that too based on a more efficient and optimized Haswell architecture. In addition, an extension to Intel Advanced Vector Extensions 2 (Intel AVX2) doubles the width of vector integer instructions to 256 bits per clock cycle for integer sensitive workloads and delivers up to 1.9x higher performance gains.
The memory bandwidth has been increased tremendously as well with the help of DDR4 support. Users will experience 1.4 times higher memory bandwidth compared to last generation Xeon E5 CPUs. Intel Advanced Encryption Standard New Instructions (Intel AES-NI) have also been enhanced to accelerate data encryption and decryption by up to 2x without sacrificing application response times. Also the processors are built built using Intel’s industry-leading and energy-efficient 22nm, 3-D Tri-Gate technology, cutting power consumption while boosting performance of transistors. The new “per-core” power states dynamically regulate and adjust power in each processor core for more power-efficient workload processing.
Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 processors can be paired with Intel Communications Chipset 89xx series featuring Intel Quick Assist technology to enable faster encryption and compression performance. In addition, the new Intel Ethernet Controller XL710 family helps address the increasing demands on networks with capabilities to enable better performance for virtualized servers and networks. The flexible 10/40 gigabit Ethernet controller provides twice the bandwidth while consuming half the power compared with the previous generation.
