MSI GT80 Titan: first gaming laptop with a mechanical keyboard

There were days when you could get decent gaming laptops only from Alienware but a lot has changed since then. More seasoned companies like MSI, ASUS and others have also jumped in and now they are leading this segment of the market. MSI just revealed their all-new GT80 Titan gaming laptop. What’s special about this 18-inch gaming laptop is that it comes with a full-on mechanical keyboard. The GT80 Titan is world’s first gaming laptop to have an actual mechanical keyboard.

The MSI GT80 Titan’s keyboard is developed in cooperation with SteelSeries and uses regular Cherry MX Brown switches. Furthermore, the keycaps are very standard with 27mm thickness; that’s nearly five times the thickness of usual laptops keys. This results in superior tactile feedback, increased durability and an overall superior gaming experience.

Performance is key for gamers and the GT80 Titan will forever change the mobile gaming experience,” says Andy Tung, president of MSI Pan America. “We are proud to be at the forefront of the gaming evolution and will continue to provide solutions that deliver the most outstanding gaming experience in the world.

In order to accommodate the mechanical keyboard and give it feeling of a true gaming keyboard, MSI has moved it to the bottom edge which leaves open space on its top. It’s look quite odd but MSI has tried to cover it with their dragon logo. Furthermore, the trackpad is moved to right side and it also acts as numeric keypad when needed.

Furthermore, MSI also claims that it is the lightest and slimmest 18-inch gaming laptop, measuring 17% thinner and 22% lighter than its closest competitor.

However, that’s not where GT80 Titan’s story ends. Even though MSI has not released any of its specifications, we’ve heard from multiple sources that it’ll come equipped with NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 980M graphics chip and there will be option to put two of them in SLI. That’ll probably make GT80 Titan one of the most capable ones. Apart from that, it’ll have all the hardware that today’s high-end gaming laptops come with.

MSI has not released any information about its pricing or availability date but it’s expected to go up for sale early next year and it’ll be shown at CES 2015.
