MSI showed three motherboards based on upcoming Intel X79 chip-set at IDF 2011. Three motherboards include the mainstream X79A-GD45, the mid-end X79A-GD65 and one step up from mid-end is the X79A-GD65 (8D).
All these motherboards feature three PCI Express 3.0 slots each and two additional PCI Express 2.0 slots on GD65 and GD65 (8D). PCI Express 3.0 ports are differentiated from PCI Express 2.0 ports by the use of different support clips. GD45 and GD65 have 4 DDR3 DIMM quad channel slots each with support for up to 64 GB of DDR3 memory at 2400 MHz while the GD65 (8D) has 8 DDR3 DIMM quad channel slots that support up to 64 GB of DDR3 memory at 2400 MHz. Yes, the ‘8D’ designates the eight memory slots.
All these motherboards feature MSI’s Military Class III components, OC Genie II overclocking button and ClickBIOS II UEFI along with other standard features like SATAIII 6GB/s and USB 3.0 ports.
These X79 based motherboards will support 2nd generation Intel Core Series Sandy Bridge-E processors and will hit retail along with the processors in Q4 2011.
