Noctua is easily one of the most popular and sought-after companies in the hardware market. They have been the leaders of CPU cooling market for quite some time now. Their products are usually expensive as compared to the competition but the extra money gets you extreme amount of detail and quality. Noctua coolers and fans are very well-designed and carefully crafted for optimum performance and durability.
Noctua’s flagship NH-D14 dual-tower cooler is very popular among the enthusiasts and overclockers. Even though it’s a couple of years old but still gives a hard time to its newer competition. Although Noctua hasn’t refreshed their flagship for quite a while but they have introduced a couple of new coolers which are even better than the flagship and that too at a lower price and footprint. The coolers I am referring to are the NH-U12S and NH-U14S. Both of these coolers are cheaper and smaller than the NH-D14. The ‘S’ in the name specifies that they are slim designs to minimize compatibility issues with taller RAM heatsinks. We reviewed the NH-U12S a couple of months ago and we were quite surprised to see that it beats the NH-D14. However, the naming scheme tells us that Noctua isn’t replacing the legendary NH-D14 with these two coolers; we’ll hopefully see a new dual-type cooler from Noctua sometime next year.
Anyway, today we are here for the review of the NH-U14S. It’s basically the bigger sibling of the NH-U12S. The later one comes with a 120mm fan design whereas the bigger NH-U14S is designed for 140mm fans as the name specifies. It comes pre-installed with the NF-A15 PWM fan which is a 150mm fan designed to occupy space of a 140mm fan but uses 120mm mounting size. It is quite an interesting product in itself.
The NH-U14 has a very simple tower design. It has six heatpipes arranged in U-shape with thick aluminum fins stacked on them. Noctua ships it with only one fan but mounting brackets for second fan are bundled in case you want to enhance the performance with push/pull configuration.
