Samsung has just officially announced Galaxy Note7 at a grand event in New York. The long rumored phone now takes the top slot in company’s lineup with its high-end specifications and a beautiful 5.5-inch screen. The Note7 is a big step up from its predecessor, the Note5, and closely follows the design language of the recently launched Galaxy S7 Edge which is one of the best selling smartphones this year.
One of the major changes to the Galaxy Note series this year is the curved display like the Galaxy S7 Edge. It has a smaller 5.5-inch display as compared to Note5 but its curved on both sides.
Galaxy Note7 Specifications
The Galaxy Note series have always been the best in company’s lineup and the Note7 is no different. It comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 (quad-core CPU, Adreno 530 GPU) in USA with 4GB of RAM. There have been a lot of rumors pointing towards 6GB of RAM but obviously that did not happen. The Note7 will come with 64GB of storage as standard with microSD card slot which was missing in Note5. The storage can be expanded up to 256GB.
Samsung has also vastly improved the camera of Note7 as compared to its predecessor. It now comes with a 12 megapixel primary camera, which is apparently inferior to 16 megapixel shooter of Note5 but the new flagship has a wider 26mm lens and a faster F/1.7 aperture. It also has phase detection auto focus, optical image stabilization and LED flash. The sensor size is same as its predecessor at 1/2.6″ but the pixels size is slightly larger at 1.4 µm. It also shoots 4K video with a video HDR mode as well. The front camera is pretty much same at 5 megapixels, with 22mm lens but the aperture is slightly faster at F/1.7 (vs F/1.9 of Note5) which should help in making brighter selfies.
Samsung has also replaced the microUSB port of Note5 with the new USB Type C in Note7. In addition to the finger print scanner, there is an iris scanner in Note7 as well which can be used to unlock the device among other things.
The Note7 comes with a 3,500 mAh battery which is a big step up from 3,000 mAh of Note5. The battery is slightly smaller than the 3,600 mAh unit in the Galaxy S7 Edge, the extra space has probably been taken by S-Pen. The massive battery of Note7 can be charged wirelessly and it also supports quick charging which pumps the battery to about 60% in 30 minutes only.
In terms of size, the Note7 is very slightly thicker and taller than the Note5 but less wide as compared to its predecessor thanks to the curved display.
The S-Pen has also been improved with increased sensitivity for more accurate writing and drawing. The phone also comes with IP68 certification to protect it against water and dust.
Galaxy Note7 Software
The Galaxy Note7 comes with the latest TouchWiz running on top of Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. There are several new software features as well thanks to the curved display and the new improved S-Pen. The stylus can leave notes on the Always on screen and it can also write underwater. Other new features include a text magnifying glass, a translate tool, even a GIF creator.
The Samsung Galaxy Note7 will go on pre-order tomorrow, August 3. Sales officially start on August 19, at least in the US. It will be available in Blue Coral, Silver Titanium and Black Onyx.
